Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger said “If you don’t have a vision of where you are going, if you do not have a goal where to go, you drift around and you never end up anywhere”.

A brand new year is upon us once again. At this period of the year, you may want to set New Year resolutions. To put it another way, and quite simply what do you want to do in 2019.

My advice is to set a couple of realistic goals. Setting realistic goals would your compass for a better and prosperous year. In previous years, have you ever wondered?

  • Why the goals for that year went unfulfilled?
  • Why the projects you planned for this year hit the rocks?
  • Why you keep repeating the same mistakes?

I bet it was because there was no clear route to arriving at that goal. You knew you wanted to do. You knew the target, but nothing about how to achieve it. That was an entirely different story.

All that bravado of shouting at rooftops and telling everyone that you are going to do A, B and C is nice. However, the more important question of how to reach the dream remains.

A big part of winning starts by aligning your plans with your goals in order to start off on the right footing. Here a few tips that could help us all begin the New Year the right way.

  1. Be inspired:

Look for inspirations. All around you, there are stories of great men and women who in one year, on one fateful day took a decision to propel their lives forward.

Perhaps this would be the year;

  • you start your own business
  • you publish a book
  • you go back to school
  • you do a career change

Whatever it may be, look to your friends, your bosses, and your colleges for inspiration. If no one within your inner circle inspires you, then look at international icons. Someone else inspired them, and now let them not only inspire you, but also challenge you to move forward into greatness.

  1. Be positive:

Think positive while being realistic. Let us look at this example. We know that you want to be the lead in that organization. However there are several people ahead of you who have the qualifications as well as the experience which you do not yet possess. To put it bluntly, you are not going to be the lead on your current skillset. You need to advance.

Be honest with yourself, and know which classes to take. Be practical and positive. In this scenario, taking the requisite courses would elevate your position in life. Go one step at a time.

  1. Review previous years:

Just like businesses do, where they review previous performances, do the same with your life goals. Look at the previous years, and evaluate yourself. You can grade yourself against the previous years by asking yourself the following simple questions;

  • What did you do so well the previous year that pushed you forward?
  • What did you do wrong that hindered your progress?
  • What did you wish you did differently?
  • What did I start and not complete?
  • What negative patterns seem to be repeating?

When you have the answers to these questions, go ahead to create strategies, and ask advice from others. The goal here is that you do not repeat those same mistakes from the previous years in 2019. This exercise is not so that you have an elegant plan. Neither is it to remind you of your unfulfilled dreams and plans. We want the lessons learned from the previous years to be your compass in guiding you towards what to do and where to go with your juicy goals. Remember, we are judged by what we finish not by what we start.

  1. Break it down:

There is a popular expression that goes like this “little drops of water make a mighty ocean”. Break your one audacious plan into smaller doable parts.

  • Break your one year plan into deliverables for each month.
  • For each month, break those deliverables down into weeks.
  • And for each week, break down your deliverables into days.

Consequently, on a daily basis, you would be able to do something, no matter how small to move your dream forward.

  1. Write it all down:

For this New Year, write it all down. I repeat, write your goals clearly down. Write down your goal in a clear concise manner. It should neither be so small that it can be done in a matter of days nor so big that it would involve several years to have it done. Clearly written goals, which we can see and refer to reinforce your commitment to having them completed.

Now, go forward set incredible goals. Let us see them achieved in 2019. Together let us start this New Year well. Have a prosperous new year. If you have other tips to share, please share them in the comment section.

Cheers!
