For the love of the game and world cup glory 32 of the best teams have gathered in Russia. Today, we briefly look at these teams. These are my opinions on each team. Today we profile the Tunisia team.
Tunisia are being led to the tournament by a coach who has tasted success consistently.
- He was assistant to Roger Lemerre as Tunisia won the 2004 African Cup of Nations
- He led ES Tunis to a historic treble in 2011
The Tunisia footballing body will be hoping some of that success rubs off on the national team.
Tunisia have appeared in the finals four times already – 1978, 1998, 2002 and 2006. Interestingly enough, it was in their 1st appearance that something special almost happened. They have the distinguished honor of being the 1st team from Africa to win a match at the World cup, in 1978 when they beat Mexico. They almost progressed to the next stage too but were narrowly knocked out.
Ever since then they have not impressed on the World stage. However on the African stage they are one of the powerhouses on the African continent.
It is true past performances have not done merit to how really good this team is. Still Russia could be the year they surprise all.
Wahbi Khazri would have to step up to compensate for the injury to star player Youssef Msakni
Tunisia like all the North African teams are stable, consistent in their approach but sometimes rather blunt in the final third. If that bluntness can be addressed, then they could shock the entire world.
Did you know
Tunisia’s only win at the World Cup has come in their very 1st match in 1978.
